Message: TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [buffer size=5000]

Version: 2.x, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

Problem

Typesetting the document results in this LaTeX error message:

TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [buffer size=5000]

The message appears in the LaTeX .log file for the document. LaTeX stops at the point of the error, so the complete document does not appear in the TrueTeX Previewer.

Explanation

When you save documents using the Portable LaTeX filter, the graphicx package is used for the graphics in a document. The graphicx package attempts to scan the contents of the graphics file. If the graphics file was originally created in a non-Windows environment and uses either the Macintosh or Unix line end characters instead of the Windows line end characters, LaTeX will not see the line end and will stop, issuing the error.

Solution

The line ends in the graphics file must be converted to Windows line end characters. One method of changing the line end characters is to use the freeware program FixEOL, which you can download.

  1. Using your Internet browser, open http://lcpx07.lc.ehu.es/jma/win95.html.

  2. Scroll down the menu and click Fix End-Of-Line.

  3. Download FxEOL122.exe to your local hard drive.

The file is also available on our server.

  4. Run FxEOL122.exe to install FixEOL.

The installation places the program on your hard drive and adds a shortcut to the Windows Start menu.

  5. Use the shortcut created by the installation to start FixEOL.

  6. If you are working in Windows XP, the system may display a message that begins like this:

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly.

The website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448/en-us contains more information and links to a downloadable solution for the problem. Download the fix and restart FixEOL.

  7. When the FixEOL dialog appears,
    Figure

check the Save backup and/or Keep time stamp boxes, as you desire.

  8. Open Windows Explorer and select the file with line end characters that must be changed.

  9. Drag the file from Windows Explorer to the FixEOL dialog.

The program fixes the line end characters immediately.
