Resolving unmatched cross-references

Version: 2.x, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x - Scientific WorkPlace & Scientific Word

You can quickly determine whether all cross-references in your typeset document have been matched to a marker by looking at the document .log file. Unmatched cross-references result from missing or misreferenced markers.

  1. Place markers and cross-references in the document as necessary.

  2. From the File menu, choose Save.

  3. From the Typeset menu, choose Compile or Compile PDF.

  4. When the compilation is complete, open the .log file with an ASCII editor, such as Notepad.

  5. Scroll to the end of the file.

If any cross-references are unresolved, a message like this will appear near the end of the log file:

LaTeX Warning: There were undefined references.

  6. If unresolved cross-references exist, scroll the .log file for additional warnings indicating missing markers.

The warnings will look something like this:

LaTeX Warning: Reference `markerx' on page 4 undefined on input line 205.

  7. In SWP or SW, insert missing markers and correct marker misreferences.

  8. Save and typeset the document again.

  9. Check the new .log file to make certain all cross-references are now resolved.
