Accented character doesn't appear correctly on the screen

Version: 3.0 - Scientific WorkPlace, Scientific Word, & Scientific Notebook

Problem

The letter s with a hat, whether in math or text ( Math: s hat ŝ), appears as a box when you view the document and when you choose Preview from the File menu. However, if you choose Preview from the Typeset menu, the letter appears as it should. This doesn't happen with other letters, nor does it happen with other accents on the letter s.

Explanation

Either you haven't installed Windows Multilanguage support, or your Windows screen driver is incapable of displaying Unicode characters above 255.

Solution

Make sure Windows Multilanguage support has been installed on your system. Also, make sure you have installed the most recent version of your Windows screen driver.

Additionally, look at the Font Mapping settings, which control how the program displays characters that are not in the standard ASCII range:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose User Setup.

  2. Choose the Font Mapping tab.

  3. Uncheck the two bottom items (Use Accent Font Mapping and Use Universal Font Mapping).

  4. Choose OK.

You can find more information on Font Mapping in the online Help system provided with SWP/SW 3.0.
